and president obama, lawmakers meet 3 p.m. on the fiscal cliff at the white house today. markets are going to be watching that real close, but of course, the markets close about an hour after the meeting starts. so, that meeting probably won't have much impact on the markets themselves unless there are leaks about what might happen. until then, any developments out of d.c. i'v i have are going to drive this market. we're calling it sound bite trading. we're covering it. the opening bell is next. want to know what i did in the last five hours? i played a round of golf. then i read a book while teaching myself how to play guitar; ran ten miles while knitting myself a sweater; jumped out of a plane. finally, i became a ping pong master while recording my debut album. how you ask? with 5-hour ergy. i get hours of energy now -- no crash later. wait to sethe next five hours. >>> just a few seconds from the opening bell, there are no government reports in the news background today. all we've got is a 3 p.m. meeting at the white house between the top two democrats and the top two

president obama meeting with the leaders at the white house. misreporting going on that the president had a new deal, looked like progress was made. no. the president had the same deal that republicans walked away from about a week ago, if you call it a deal, the deal is that he won't tax people higher above the 400,000 mark. shibani: the meeting still going on, rich edson live at the white house with the latest details. what do we know now, rich? >> what we got from an administration official, that president obama offered what he detailed in the speech a week ago keeping tax rates where they are for families earning less than $250,000 a year, extending long term unemployment insurance policy, and that bit of detail he gave a week ago in a speech is basically derived from the larger deficit proposal offered over, really, the last couple years as president of the united states. we're waiting whether or not in the meeting, lasting an hour at the white house, started at 3:10, is whether or not they made progress towards changing that proposal in a

. >>> reporter: in what's seen as a last-minute attempt to reach a deal, president obama meets at the white house with senate majority leader harry reid, house minority leader nancy pelosi, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell and house speaker john boehner. they have only four days to reach an agreement or the u.s. economy will go off the so- called "fiscal cliff." that's when automatic spending increases and cuts would take effect. reaching a deal won't be easy because both sides are involved in a high stakes political blame game. >> we are here in washington working while the members of the house of representatives are out watching movies and watching the kids play soccer and basketball and doing all kinds of things. they should be here. >> i told the president we would be happy to look at wah he proposes but the truth is we are coming up against a hard deadline and as i said this is a conversation we should have had months ago. >> reporter: democrats want to extend the bush-era tax cuts to everyone except those americans making $250,000 or more a year. many republicans are again
